After pilgrimages to the Holy Land had become all but impossible, the Sacro Monte di Varallo — founded by Franciscans and situated high above the town of Varallo in Piedmont — developed into a central pilgrimage site. The interplay of sculptural figure ensembles and illusionistic wall paintings there enables a chronological walk through the history of Christ's salvation and invites emotional participation. Sophie De Oliveira offers the first systematic study of the modes of participation and reception at the Sacro Monte in the Cinquecento and Seicento, opening up new perspectives on the visual and ritual practice of early modern pilgrimage.
