Alongside the Bauhaus, the study examines four further reform schools with regard to their programmes, the role of architecture and craft, public relations and reception.

Today the Bauhaus counts as one of the most influential cultural institutions in twentieth-century Germany. At its core, however, it began as a training school that, like many others after 1919, put reforms in art education into practice. The study presents the Bauhaus as one actor within a wider movement — one whose guiding ideas the famous school neither held alone nor had itself developed. Comparing the Bauhaus with Burg Giebichenstein in Halle, the Frankfurt art school, the Cologne Werkschulen and the Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst in Berlin brings programmatic parallels to light and, on that basis, analyses the particular reception of the Bauhaus.
