Against the background of the crisis of the image, which reached its first peak in the 1520s, Henry Kaap draws a connection between the conceptions of art held by the Venetian painter Lorenzo Lotto and by the collector Andrea Odoni. Working with three guiding notions — veneration of images, scepticism towards images, and visual wit — the author assumes that the three inevitably permeate one another, so that their ambivalent tension runs through the entire study. If veneration and scepticism are only two sides of the same coin, Lotto is able to reconcile them in visual wit.
