The concept of “Sichtbarkeit” (visibility) is bound up with the medium of stained glass in a particular way. With their luminosity, stained-glass paintings unfold an enormous visual presence within a space; at the same time, they often elude unimpeded perception owing to great distance or problematic states of preservation. This dichotomy gives rise to a wealth of aesthetic, art-historical, technological and conservation-related questions, of which this collected volume offers a first overview.
